Immoral Daisy Buchanan - Free Essay Example

The novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is told by Nick Carraway who lived on Long Island next to a man named Jay Gatsby who lived in a huge mansion. Nick became very curious about Gatsby after being the only person to receive an invitation to one of his huge parties. He later finds out he is in love with his cousin Daisy Buchanan, who is married to Tom Buchanan. The two meet again and start seeing each other, while Tom is also having an affair with a woman from the Valley of Ashes, named Myrtle. Daisy is in love with two men and needs to decide who she wants to be with. Daisy Buchanan represents the perfect image to Gatsby, she is everything he thinks he needs to complete his life, though she is selfish and manipulative. In the beginning she is portrayed as the victim but we see her true personality unfold throughout the novel. Daisy Buchanan is a beautiful woman who is the love interest of Gatsby in this novel. Daisy grew up in Lexington, Kentucky and could have had any man that she wanted. Many of the military officers that were stationed near her home were attracted to her. One of these officers was Jay Gatsby who lied about his background to her in order for her to like him. She eventually fell in love with Gatsby but he soon had to leave to go fight in the war. Daisy wasnt willing to wait for him to return as she met Tom Buchanan (her husband in the book) and knew that he came from a wealthy background and that her parents had approved of him. Although Daisy comes across as sophisticated and charming she also turns out to be very fickle and selfish and fake. An example of this is when Nick first arrives to her home for the first time and describes her laugh as an absurd, charming little laugh (8). This shows the audience that she might be kind of fake and probably not the most genuine person. Daisy wants to come across as very sophisticated but also comes across as having to be the center of attention. She is flirtatious towards men and when she speaks she sometimes acts so excited its as if she was acting. It is obvious that the is annoyed with her husband by the way they interact with one another. You did it, Tom (Daisy) said accusingly. I know you didnt mean to, but you did do it. Thats what I get for marrying a brute of a man, a great, big, hulking physical specimen of a, (12). She doesnt appear to be afraid of him at all and they both seem to be miserable around one another. When she is around her friends, she tries to act funny and when she is around Gatsby she puts on her charm. She acts overly excited about everything he says and shows to her. In the beginning of the book, Daisy was almost looked upon as the victim and you felt a little bad for her when you found out that Tom was cheating on her. By the end of the book you do not feel sorry for her anymore as you see the true Daisy. Daisys existence is all about social status and money. Everything she does in life has to do with these two things. The way she acts around people and the way she treats people. She almost seems to be a little insecure in that she is very dependent on men but yet she also seems to be angry at them a lot as well. She doesnt want to have to be responsible for anything nor does she want to have to make any decisions. She just wants to keep her life the way it is and be taken care of. This is the reason why she wont leave Tom even though she knows that he is cheating on her. She cant leave Tom for Gatsby as it would be too hard and Gatsby doesnt have the social status that Tom does. They also were too much alike and probably deserved each other. They were careless people. Tom and Daisy-they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made, (1 79). The story ends with Gatsby dying as a result of taking the blame for killing someone when in actuality, it was Daisy. This is where we get the full picture of how the character we were introduced to in the beginning of the novel seemed to have changed drastically compared to the character we see at the end of the novel. However in reality it is the same person but we just dont know the true Daisy yet. Daisy was portrayed as the poor wife of Tom who was having an affair. We initially dont know if Daisy knows about the affair or not. Then as the story unfolds we see glimpses that maybe Daisy does know about Tom but just doesnt really care as their marriage does not appear to be that great. You see how Daisy doesnt really seem to have a lot of love for her daughter as not much is mentioned about her and she never really seemed to spend much time with her. It isnt until she meets up with Gatsby that we start to get a true picture of what Daisy is really like. She has no problem starting a relationship with Gatsby and then is perfectly fine when Gatsby takes the blame for her killing Toms mistress. Finally when we are told that Daisy does not attend Gatsbys funeral but instead takes off with Tom and doesnt leave a forwarding address. We see that she is capable of a lot of bad and has very little morals in life.

I am learning that no matter how each situation is similar we all deal and learn forgiveness differently. Salem Trial in The Crucible by Arthur Miller Essay

The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an interpretation of the Salem witch trials of 1692 in Puritan Massachusetts in which religion, self- preservation and self-dignity play a vital role. The three factors I listed played a huge role in John Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, Reverend Hale, Danforth and many other lives. Many other characters such as, Abigail Williams and her friends can be characterized by being greedy, bitter, and selfish. In the play, Miller reveals how people can go against their own morals, therefore they can protect themselves. In Arthur Millers play, The Crucible, he reveals to readers how fear escalated in Salem because of peoples desire for personal gain. John Proctor’s conscience is telling him that he should stand up to court and to not fear them. Furthermore it is telling him he shouldnt lie to the court and then his death can be a proud one because he spoke up. However his natural instinct, is telling him to lie. It’s telling him let people loose respect for you at least you will be alive. If he lied he will be able to grow old with his wife, see his children grow up, but he will be forever disrespected. As we continue to read throughout the book, we notice the true colors of certain characters such as Abigail Williams. Abigail is a very intelligent, persuasive, malicious young woman. She is one of the main characters in the novel and is the main reason witch craft started in Salem. At first Abigail portrayed a young, innocent girl, but once you found out what she was doing with John Proctor, you started to think otherwise. She betrayed her own friends just to protect herself. She stole from her uncle; therefore she can escape from the entire catastrophe she had created. The first reason Abigail Williams is to blame for the deaths of those during the witch hunts is due to jealousy. With all the technical jargons, I think the NetVis site is designed for technical experts or professionals who have a need for the software. Technical knowledge or at the least familiarity in mathematical sequences, statistics and other related topic areas is a prerequisite   in order to maximize the use of this tool. Although there is an explanation box for each â€Å"heavy† term such as geodesics, transitivity, split value, etc., it is still difficult to analyze and/or interpret data coming from the point of view of a novice. To further my point, I tried the NetVis Module Tutorial. I followed each step, reading instructions carefully and revising my input data before I could get an analysis and a network visualization. What I did was create two social networks with five members for each group. These were, in reality, my two sets of friends. The â€Å"meta tag† I used was secret sharing wherein the question to be asked for each member is â€Å"How much information do you share with ____?† Collecting the matrix data using an improvised five-point scale and following the rest of the instructions, I was ready and pretty excited to view the analysis and visualization of my sample social networks. Before making a full interpretation, I needed to understand first the tools for analysis because it is hard to derive a conclusion just by looking at all the data matrices. I checked all the definitions for degree, betweenness and closeness centrality. I gave special attention to the definitions of density, transitivity, structural holes and split value. I also checked the sub-tools for analysis such as constraint, effective size, efficiency, hierarchy, reachability, shortest path and so on. Finally, the over-all conclusion I got was that the first social network or the members of my first set of friends are more closely-knit (based on the answers that members of this group share â€Å"secrets† or personal and sensitive information with each other more often) compared to the members of the other group. This was primarily illustrated by the higher values in bridges, ties and shortest path between each pair of â€Å"actors† and among all members of the group. However, it is also worth noting that the difference in values between the two groups is not that big (0.2 to 0.3 difference only). I found the results interesting because it is through this tool that I realized that my friends coming from two different groups have trust and confidence with each other on the basis of sharing personal and sensitive information. For a student, this is one practical use of the NetVis Module. In fact, I am looking forward to do more â€Å"experiments† using this tool—creating other social networks with the integration of other factors such as geographical distance, which I have not included in my first trial. I could also try to analyze a larger group and see who the key players are or who plays the role of a leader. This could be done by looking at the core and periphery actors or members of the group. I could also try to find out who among the members of a group are â€Å"somewhat unreachable† (no path exists) by other members. Aside from those mentioned, there are still lots to demonstrate about the relationships among members of a particular group. These are just some of the things I would like to look into. Apart from personal use, I think the NetVis Module, with its relatively intricate procedures and tools for analysis, is primarily designed for organizations and institutions advancing certain academic, business, social, political, cultural, and economic purpose. I think that this is one limitation of this web-based tool—not everybody could use it. Of course I understand that this is not really for everyone.
